Brouwer, a supporter of intuitionism in mathematics. Brouwer had been appointed to the editorial board of "Mathematische Annalen" in 1914. But in 1928, Hilbert decided that Brouwer was becoming too influencial and tried to arbitrarily remove him from the board. Brouwer opposed the move and was supported by mathematicians as Albert Einstein and Constantin Carathéodory. However, Hilbert's position was upheld, and Brouwer left the Board devastated and mentally broken
