Description
Summary:Printed material includes the 1954 January 11 edition of Time magazine, which features Admiral Hyman Rickover on the cover and contains an article about the Nautilus; an undated commemmorative program about the submarine's launch, published by General Dynamics, which includes images from some of the photographs in the collection; a "Launching Program" with tickets, in original gold wrappers with a drawing of a submarine, coral, and a shell in blue on the front cover; an invitation to the event; and an illustrated pink paper label, "For U.S.S. Nautilus, First Nuclear Powered Submarine, Expedite."
The collection also includes a two-sided General Dynamics Corporation flag, made of Nylanin bunting and measuring approximately 4 x 6 feet, with a royal blue background and a white stripe across the center with "General Dynamics" stitched across it in black capital letters. There are four white stars above and below the center section and grommets on two ends. A small tag with the name "Bailey & Staub, New London, CT" is stitched to one edge
The collection includes sixteen black-and-white photographic prints measuring 8 x 10 inches, a nylon and wool flag, and printed material including an invitation, tickets, and programs for the event. Fifteen undated publicity shots from the launch depict: crowds of people gathered around the submarine; Mamie Eisenhower christening the submarine while standing alongside other dignitaries; and a sugar replica of the ship, made by the Culinary Institute of America. Penciled identifications on the verso of one print name the people standing with Mrs. Eisenhower as Hyman G. Rickover, Robert B. Anderson, W. D. Leggett, Jr., Lewis L. Strauss, Janice Edith Wilkinson, Edward L. Beach, and John Jay Hopkins. One additional undated print depicts a cross-section of the Triton 586 submarine; a stamp on the verso identifies the photo as coming from the Public Relations Department of General Dynamics Corporation's Electric Boat Division in Groton, Connecticut. The majority of the prints include negative numbers
