| 520 | |a Hosenfeld (1895-1952) was a Wehrmacht officer stationed in occupied Warsaw, where he organized sports and adult education programs for the soldiers and was later also involved in intelligence. He was an enthusiastic Nazi until 1942, when he was appalled to learn about the deportations from the Warsaw ghetto and the fate that awaited the Jews in Treblinka. A devout Catholic, he was certain that God's punishment would strike Germany; he viewed himself as one of the guilty due to his former blind faith in Nazism. Hosenfeld responded to pleas from Polish friends and saved politically endangered Poles. According to the preface, he also saved a number of Jews, among them the pianist Władysław Szpilman. After the Soviet liberation of Warsaw, Hosenfeld was taken prisoner; he was in poor health and died in Soviet captivity in 1952.
