520 |a This third volume dedicated to artists who have performed on the stages of the East Coast of the United States, in New York in particular, once again offers "live" performances recorded either in clubs, at festivals, or during TV shows. In this episode we find Miles Davis with the Gil Evans Orchestra during the April 1959 recording of the program The Sound Of Miles Davis, which has become cult and which is a kind of a "live" summary of his album Miles Ahead. Three of the four themes recorded that day are presented, namely "The Duke" by Dave Brubeck, Blues For Pablo by Gil Evans, and New Rumba by Ahmad Jamal. But it is John Coltrane who has the honor of opening this program, which is by no means a surprise as Coltrane's personality became central in the early 1960s. With his quartet, he reread "Alabama" and "AfroBlue." As a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, the young trumpeter Wynton Marsalis already flaunts an immense talent. Alongside guitarist Jim Hall, Sonny Rollins delivers a beautiful version of "God Bless The Child" while Dizzy Gillespie, already with his bent trumpet, who at the time called upon the young Argentinian pianist Lalo Schifrin as musical director, defends two themes including "Blues after Dark" by Benny Golson. The program also highlights three big bands: that of Ellington recorded at the Newport festival, that of Woody Herman, as well as the Thad Jones - Mel Lewis Orchestra, the latter delivering a first-rate performance.
