Description
Summary:This study includes data derived from a content analysis of all publicly available verbal articulations by Egypt's President Nasser made between 1952 and 1970. The 768 documents examined include speeches, books, articles, minutes from open and closed meetings, memoirs, and private conversations. Each document was analyzed by paragraph. Approximately 3,838 paragraphs thus constitute the units of observation in the data. Over half of the 67 variables are devoted to evidence of Nasser's knowledge, sources of knowledge, goals, and philosophical beliefs (e.g., the nature of the political universe, sources of conflict, and the conditions needed for peace). The rest of the variables include characteristics of the document under analysis, type of audience Nasser was addressing, characteristics of adversaries, and domestic and foreign policy issue areas (e.g., military, security, political, economic, and cultural) discussed in the analyzed sources
